According to reports, Microsoft is abandoning support for its Office applications on Chromebooks. According to a new report, the firm wants Chromebook users to switch to Web versions of these programmes. This decision will take effect in mid-September, and while the applications will no longer be maintained by Microsoft, they will continue to operate. Chromebook users can download Microsoft’s Office applications from the Google Play store and enjoy all of its capabilities, but the Web experience with Microsoft 365 service offers more capability.
Microsoft claimed in an email statement quoted by TechCrunch that beginning September 18, Microsoft programmes would be converted to Web experiences for Chromebook users. This implies that after September 18, Microsoft will no longer support Office programmes like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook, and they will no longer be updated or optimised. Instead, Microsoft urges Chromebook users to utilise the Web versions of these programmes for the “best experience.”
According to the announcement, “In order to deliver the best possible experience for Chromebook users, Microsoft applications (Office and Outlook) will be migrated to online experiences (Office.com and Outlook.com) on S.”
With the Web experience, Microsoft hopes to entice Chromebook users to migrate to the Microsoft 365 service, which offers more capability than individual apps. According to TechCrunch, the Web method is more suited for larger displays than the applications. It also indicates that Office applications will continue to be supported on mobile devices and tablets.
Furthermore, Chromebook users can continue to use Office programmes until September 18 and even beyond that, but Microsoft will no longer support them. This implies they will no longer get updates or new features.
Microsoft has also provided instructions for using Office on Chromebooks over the web. You will need a Microsoft account or any other account associated with Microsoft 365 subscription.
