A new Cyber shoes model, customized footwear that simulates natural movement through virtual reality using realistic foot movements, is now available on Amazon. The shoes will be compatible with a variety of Oculus Quest and Oculus Quest 2 VR headset games, including In Death: Unchained and The Wizards – Dark Times.
Further, Following a successful crowdfunding campaign, the new Cyber Shoes are expected to be available in May as an advanced version of the prototype seen at CES 2019 and designed to operate with the new Oculus Quest 2.
The most contemporary wireless Cyber shoes edition is available on Amazon in the United States for $349 (roughly £250 / AU$450). However, there is no confirmation on whether this Oculus Quest 2-compatible Cyber shoes variant would be made accessible internationally.
Cyber Shoes are like compact sandals that slide over your actual shoes and interact wirelessly with your Oculus Quest 2 VR headset. When the user (who stays seated) ‘slides’ the shoes along the ground to imitate walking or running, the motion is emulated in-game, enabling players to manage their movement and pace in a realistic manner.
Cyber shoes, as a product, have the potential to overcome the immersion gap for VR, where players are still expected to walk about using traditional analogue controllers. We like the thought of using them to move Leon about in the upcoming Resident Evil 4 VR, for example, urgently dashing away from chainsaw-wielding psychopaths as quickly as our legs can take us.
