On Android, the Google Maps Insight Tool displays users’ month-by-month travel history.
Google Maps upcoming feature update is supposed to help getting insights upon a user’s movement over time. As the name goes, ‘Insights’ is a submenu of the Timeline menu which compiles users’ movements on a monthly basis wherein it also takes into consideration the mode of transportation.
The tool assists users in keeping track of the locations they’ve visited. The Insights tool is currently only available to a small number of users, but it is expected to be available to everyone soon.
The tool is accessed by tapping on the profile icon in the top right corner and then selecting Your Timeline from the pop-up menu. The users are then presented with six options: Day, Trips, Insights, Places, Cities, and World. According to the publications SmartDroid and Android Police, users in Germany and the United Kingdom can access the Insights tool. Gadgets 360, on the other hand, was able to view the Insights tool, but only on Android-powered devices. There is no word on when the feature will be available to iOS users.
In addition to modes of transportation, Insights displays the types of places a user has visited. Shopping, food and drink, attractions, hotels, airports, and other categories are available. Google Maps also displays the amount of time the user spends in each category in the form of neatly laid out bar graphs. Finally, Google Maps’ Insight tool includes a Highlights feature that displays the busiest day of the month for a user.
